£45 taken and not provided with an exam. Refusal from management to give me a refund and on multiple occasions didn't answer the phone and took over a day to reply to emails.

There is no set curriculum that First Class Sailing teachers follow to. They each have a unique set of abilities and life experiences. They will impart knowledge in their own style and share their worldview with you. This is special in that no boat sails the same and no sailing day is ever the same.

First class sailing is … first class ! I had my competent crew course in Belgium where the Skipper barely taught anything and where the booking was poorly handled. I decided to look for a real sailing school with real teaching. It started with the First Class Sailing website, full of information, that showed me that these guys took their business seriously. My booking was swiftly handled and even my dietary needs (I’m a vegetarian) was taken into account. I was provided with all the necessary information before my Day Skipper course. My teacher, Richard, was extremely competent, friendly and very serious about teaching. He made sure we went through all the items of the course and that we learned the skills. Food on board was excellent, we stopped at several marinas where we didn’t have to pay booking fees because the school partnered with them. The oil skins we were given were top class and I spent a whole day in the rain without any moisture getting in. I highly recommend them.

First Class Sailing - RYA Day Skipper Shore Based Online Course Review. I recently completed my RYA Day Skipper theory (successfully, yay) via an online course provided by First Class Sailing. It was a Zoom based course that ran over 8 weeks and one weekend. One lesson per week, in the evening from 6-9pm followed by a final weekend of exam prep and exams. It was awesome. Our instructor, Johnny, had the patience of a Saint, and was an excellent teacher. Just to point out – I am a teacher and us teachers are a ‘tough crowd’. What I particularly appreciated was that he allowed us to learn by ‘trying’ to solve questions without too much input from him; the theory of how to tackle the questions had already been covered so experiential learning were the watch words throughout. This is terrific when you know what you are doing but here’s the Ace - Johnny was instantly on hand with the right pointers if/when I got stuck. Usually, this was just a few short words to steer me on the right lines, but on one occasion a question ‘spun me out’ and Johnny patiently took me through the question from the beginning until the light bulb went back on ‘upstairs’. The course delivery is also expertly paced and particularly well structured. I had expected the course to start with maritime rules/regs with pages and pages of reading. Nope – within minutes, the charts were out, the equipment was being used and we were ‘navigating’. And that’s how it continued. The maritime regs were all covered but introduced over the whole course – so they got embedded along the way; clever. The course material/content was excellent as well – potentially ‘dull’ topics like meteorology (I’ve been on the wrong end of a boring meteorology course in the past and it was brutal) proved fascinating; ‘bucket’ (those in the know will know 😉 ) loads real life experiences relating to the content were shared by Johnny and we were all riveted. But again – the mark of a great teacher – the floor was open and we were encouraged to share our experiences/knowledge as well, learning a lot from each other as the course progressed. After finishing the course, I filled in a questionnaire. One of the questions was along the lines of ‘What would you change to improve the course’? My answer was simple. “Nothing” Previously, I completed RYA Comp Crew with First Class Sailing and that was an unforgettably brilliant experience. These folks have the magic sauce and from my perspective, they are the ‘Ronseal’ of sailing course providers, so it was logical that I would do the Day Skipper theory with them – I have not regretted that decision for a second and am looking forward to putting all this new knowledge to the test on the practical course with them, imminently. Watch this space.
