A great museum gives an real insight into the life of a cavalry soldier when the horse ruled the battlefield. The progress through history to the armoured regiments of today is explained in full as well as accounts from the Charge of the light brigade and the Battle of Waterloo. Not a huge museum but well worth spending some time reading all of the information concerning the exhibits.

This is a little gem of a museum, full to the brim of historical artefacts and information. It forms part of a military history museum centre, sharing a building with the Gurkhas museum. If you are ever in the vicinity I highly recommend a visit, you won't be disappointed.

For those who have no knowledge of what a cavalry regiment was or does now this museum has an atmospheric walk through the ages. Located in Penninsular Barracks of the Romsey Road the staff are knowledgeable and helpful for your visit. The gardens and architecture are most interesting, with walkways off and historical placks secreted. There are also other regimental museums inside the barracks so we'll worth a day out.

I decided to make a trip to Winchester on the 4th September 2018. Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. It is situated about 61 miles south west of London and around 13 from Southampton which is its closest city. Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum. The city is, home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still using its original buildings. There is so much to see here in this fine city and spending a day here you would find it difficult to cover all the famous sites. I then walked up to the Winchester’s Military Quarter which is situated in the impressive preserved Victorian barracks next to the Great Hall. There are six museums to explore, each one with stunning collections of medals, beautiful paintings, uniforms, fascinating archive film and personal souvenirs. Together they tell the story of British soldiers in peace and in war, at home and abroad, in the last 300 years. There is something to interest all ages, and all members of the family: you can hear the stories of the Battle of Waterloo and of the Charge of the Light Brigade, experience the culture of Nepal, and discover when women first joined the Army. You can also find out how the Hampshire Tigers got their name, and what it takes to be a modern Rifleman. Winchester’s Military Museums is a grouping of six military museums situated within yards of each other on an historic site close to the city centre of Winchester and adjacent to the Great Hall. The six museums are: Horse Power, the Regimental Museum of The King’s Royal Hussars The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum The Royal Green Jackets Museum The Rifles Museum The Gurkha Museum The Guardroom Museum, the Museum of the Adjutant-General’s Corps Each museum is separately run and well worth a visit in its own right. A visit to Winchester’s Military Museums, however, provides an opportunity to visit all of them and enjoy an interesting day out.
