From being greeted by the most friendliest staff, to the most beautiful vegan food I’ve had in a very long time, The Orchid is a definite must whilst visiting York. Not far from the hotel we are staying at, I found this place previously on Google as it had not only a fully vegan/vegetarian menu , but a few Gluten Free dishes aswell which I was pleasantly surprised at. The food was absolutely delicious, came out super fast, the price was so reasonable to the point we had to have desert and coffee afterwards. There is so many dishes to chose from, and I highly thank our server for recommending different dishes for us to share on the table. Everything was outstanding. Highly recommend this little gem of a place. If I’m up this way again I will defo pop in to The Orchid for a meal :)

We are very sorry to leave a bad rating and report this as we are vegans and support vegan business wherever possible, but our experience was very disappointing and emotional since we were declined entry into the restaurant just because we had our dog with us. After a 2 hours journey to York looking very much forward to enjoy the vegan kitchen in the orchid, we finally arrived at the restaurant. On opening the door the waiter gave us a very friendly welcome at first sight. when he saw our middle sized sweet looking dog he, still very politely, said: " I am sorry, no dogs allowed". I asked why and he replied " this is a vegan restaurant". I asked if he was serious and he repeated "this is a vegan restaurant". Another waitress joined him and repeated his sentence as well. I declared that we are vegans and that the explanation would not make any sense but they repeated their slogan one more time and offered ordering food for take away. We left the door step under confusion and a light shock. I rechecked and nowhere on the website nor Google maps a no dog policy is mentioned. As GB is known to be a very dogfriendly nation, every restaurant owner should point out any strange policies in big red letters on every marketing channel to avoid unpleasant situation like this. Please mind that your own website states "We oppose discrimination of all forms across all species". Well, you discrimated a dog and his owners by declining entry, not vegan at all. This rating is not related to the food, ambiente, service quality or else, just to the strange anti-animal policy in an vegan restaurant and the missing communication about it.
