I’ve been with many friends to get tattoos done here, and I won’t lie when I say they’re absolutely great. However my experiences haven’t been the same — recently I sent a reference photo of a mermaid to be tattooed and my artist drew up something completely opposite to what I requested. He drew a super detailed woman rather than the nymph like one I had requested. He even went as far as to draw her front facing and showing her chest when that wasn’t what I asked for. He then went on to insult my reference several times, noting how it would look bad to other people and how he could barely even use it as a reference. Instead of redrawing the design to fit what I actually asked for (as I was visibly uncomfortable) he told me he had limited time and was willing to do the original design as long as I was “aware it would be on my body forever”. Terrible attitude, super patronising, even made some comments about how the mermaid I sent did not have the “female form”. Complained via email and was asked to come in, when I did I didn’t even get given the chance to request my deposit back. The person I spoke to just kept saying how they would draw the design I wanted, and kept stressing how the original artist had “offered to redraw my piece”. Yeah, he did, after belittling me and making me feel like an idiot. I then tried to make it clear I didn’t want another tattoo but I wanted to discuss the way I was treated. The lady just told me how kind and genuine the artist was and that I had misconstrued what he said. I don’t think I did honestly. I just wanted my deposit back. I never left because of design alone - if he had been a little more polite about my tattoo choices and the design I wanted then maybe I would have reconsidered leaving. I was too humiliated and upset to stay anymore. The lady I spoke to today kept going on about my original tattoo want and instead of listening to my concerns about the way I was treated, just shut me down and offered me another consultation. Guess I’m not getting my £50 back, and I get to give them more money. Thanks for ignoring the poor treatment I received guys, and thanks for making sure your artist drilled it into my head that tattoos are permanent, despite the fact that I already have 6. I’ll be really careful about sending references in the future. Apparently it’s too picky to decline a tattoo that looks nothing like your reference.
