I never leave reviews for shops normally, but just a special shout-out to the staff at Yohji today. I didn’t get either of the staffs names but they were so sweet and helpful and made me feel totally at ease :) even though I didn’t purchase, they sent me away with lots of goodies and I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in London (p.s very sad I can't commute for a job from Glasgow)

TW: Gender Discrimination My partner and I were in London and highly admire Yohji Yamamoto and all of his work so we went directly to this store as first time visitors to view and purchase a shirt from the S’YTE collection which had caught my eye online. We entered the store and went downstairs to be coldly greeted by a person who worked there asking if we needed anything, I pulled up the link to the shirt I wanted to buy and he seemed irritated when informing us that they don’t deal with products from any of the diffusion brands; which was understandable, however I asked if we could browse the other products downstairs and he told us it was just “womens” products downstairs and that we would have better luck upstairs (bare in mind there were 2 other male presenting customers downstairs browsing the beautiful garments) I bit my tongue and politely thanked him and went upstairs to see if there was a similar product in the “mens section”. As I walked upstairs and past the dresses and blouses in the “mens section” I couldn’t immediately see a similar garment so I showed one of the other 2 people working there if there was anything similar, they were very kind and we walked over to get a second opinion from the person behind the desk, both were very lovely. Quite quickly, the person from downstairs, who essentially dismissed us, came up and walked over saying “I told you we only sell the main brand here” as if we were slow and they were reprimanding children. I cut him off and said, “actually we were seeing if there were any similar products here, thank you.” And he walked away. One of the 2 lovely people behind the desk advised we may find a similar product downstairs, I told them that we were told it was a woman’s section only downstairs and they confirmed what I already knew (that the brand is genderless and there is no definitive “woman’s section”). The 2 other people working there were so nice and sweet and did brighten up the situation and tried to salvage my custom in a very professional way, however at that point I felt very embarrassed, angry and disillusioned by the fact that a brand known for representing freedom of expression, had someone working for them that judged my partner and I in a way that led that individual to treat us like idiots and weaponised our gender as an excuse to gate-keep us from browsing the store. Thank you to the other 2 people there today, we probably won’t be returning to the store any time soon but very much appreciate you both. 🖤
