This apparent relic of the Parisian jazz age on Sherwood Street opened in 2012, though you might be forgiven for thinking it had been around for much longer. Unlike its sister brasserie downstairs, Zédel, Café ZL—geddit—has no pedigree dating back to 1915 but cleverly uses the guts of the hotel that used to sit above it to create an inviting space that leads to its bigger sister downstairs—or catches you on the way out if you could not get a table. Smartly dressed waiters, newspapers on sticks, reliable coffee: this is just the place to while away a morning, afternoon or evening when the modern world has become tiresome. Call ZL what you like—a fake, a fraud, a fantasy—when somewhere captures the elegance of ages past this well, it seems churlish to ask about her age.
